How to lower alkalinity in a reef tank

Short answer: you almost never need to remove alkalinity. You lower it by stopping or cutting whatever is raising it and letting your tank's own daily consumption pull it back down — helped along by a water change if you want it faster. Bring it down no quicker than about 1 dKH per day; a fast drop stresses coral just as much as a fast rise. Here's how to do it without crashing the tank.

First — is it actually too high?

The normal reef range is 7–11 dKH (many SPS keepers run the lower end, 7–8). A reading a little above your target is not an emergency, and it is not toxic. What actually harms coral is the swing — bouncing between, say, 11 and 8 — not sitting steady at a number slightly higher than you intended. If you're at 9.5 and aiming for 8.5, the calm move is to ease off dosing and let it drift, not to react.

The most common reason a tank sits high is over-dosing or chasing the number: adding a full correction, seeing it climb past target, and then reacting to that — the same habit that causes the swings in the first place.

The safe way down

  1. Cut or pause the dose. Your corals consume alkalinity every day. If you stop adding it, the level falls on its own, at your tank's real consumption rate — the gentlest possible way down, with no chemicals and no shock. This is almost always the right lever.
  2. Do a water change with a normal-alkalinity salt mix. A change dilutes your water toward the mix's alkalinity. If your mix sits around 8–9 dKH and your tank is at 12, several modest changes bring it down steadily. Match temperature and salinity as usual.
  3. Don't reach for acid. Adding an acid to "burn off" alkalinity also drops pH sharply and is easy to overshoot — a real risk to a stocked display. It's not worth it when cutting the dose does the job safely.

Whatever you do, keep the rate to no more than ~1 dKH per day (closer to 0.5 dKH/day for an SPS-dominant tank). If you're 3 dKH high, let it come down over several days, not in an afternoon.
